Meet the Band - The Euphoniums

The Euphonium is a large, baritone voiced brass instrument that is derived from the Greek work "EUPHNOS" meaning "well-sounding" or "sweet-voiced"   A traditional brass band will normally have 2 Euphoniums, the Principal and a 2nd Euphonium.

Darren Wood

My name is Darren Wood and I am the Bands Principal Euphonium Player and Training Band Musical Director.

I have been playing with the Yorkshire Traction Honley Band since I was 7 years old. I have a lot of family members that play Brass instruments so it wasn’t a big surprise that I found myself in the Brass Banding World.

Over the years I have played many instruments including Cornet, Flugelhorn, Tenor Horn, Baritone and Euphonium.

As well as playing, I also teach. Around 4 years ago, both my Grandad and myself decided to help others to learn how to play by giving up our time and give 1 to 1 lessons before a band rehearsals.  After less than 1 year, we had enough beginners learning to play, that we were able to start up a Training Band, which still runs on a Monday evening.

We still provide 1 to 1 lessons along side the Training Band as we have players with various abilities, some that are just starting and some that are now playing in both the Training Band and the Senior Band.
When I’m not at Band I run a small digital printing company called DK Print Limited which I set up with my sister when I was 19.

I am a big Huddersfield Town fan and love going to watch them all over the country.

But most of my time is spent with my family. Between me and my partner Amy, we have 4 children (Jamie, Ruby, Ethan and George) so there is never a dull moment.

I love listening to Brass Band music and my favourite pieces are ‘The Olympic Spirit’, ’The Cavalier’ and ‘Iona’
